Study in New Zealand for Vietnamese Students FAQs
The total average cost for self-funded Vietnamese students ranges from NZD $42,000 to $65,000+ per year. Undergraduate tuition fees range between NZD $25,000 and $40,000 per year, depending on the major. For living expenses, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) requires students to prove financial capability of at least NZD $20,000 per year for higher education programmes and NZD $17,000 per year for school-level students.
To secure direct admission into a Bachelor's degree programme in New Zealand, Vietnamese students generally need a high school graduation GPA of 7.0 to 8.0/10 (depending on the institution) and an IELTS score of at least 6.0 (with no sub-score below 5.5). For Master's programmes, a GPA of 7.0/10+ and an IELTS score of 6.5 are standard. Students who fall short of these scores can opt for the Foundation or Diploma pathway programmes.
International students enrolled in full-time courses lasting at least one academic year are permitted to work up to 25 hours per week during semesters and up to 40 hours per week (full-time) during scheduled holiday periods. Postgraduate students enrolled in a Master's by Research or Doctoral (PhD) programme are exempt from this restriction and can work unlimited hours. From 1 April 2026, New Zealand's adult minimum wage is NZD $23.95 per hour.
The duration of a New Zealand Post-Study Work Visa varies depending on the level of qualification achieved:
- Bachelor's Degrees (Level 7) and Taught Master's (Level 9): Granted a 3-year stay.
- Master's by Research (Level 9) and Doctoral Degrees (Level 10): Granted a 3-year stay.
- Diplomas (Level 4–6) or Graduate Diplomas (Level 7): The visa length matches the study duration (usually 1–2 years), and the employment must align with a specific list of qualified occupations.
The fastest pathway to Permanent Residency (PR) for Vietnamese graduates is choosing a major listed on New Zealand's official Green List. Upon graduation and securing a job offer within that specific professional field, candidates can apply for residency via either the ‘Straight-to-Residence’ pathway or the ‘Work-to-Residence’ pathway (after 2 years of local employment). Highly prioritised sectors for PR include Nursing, Construction/Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology (IT/Software Engineers), and Early Childhood Education.
Yes, at many universities. Unlike the UK, where a Foundation Year is almost always mandatory, New Zealand's education landscape is highly receptive to the Vietnamese high school system. Most New Zealand universities recognise the Vietnamese High School Graduation Certificate (Bằng Tốt nghiệp THPT). If you graduated from a specialised high school (Trường THPT Chuyên) or a highly ranked mainstream high school with a strong GPA (usually 8.0 or above), you can often gain direct entry into Year 1 of a bachelor's degree, saving a full year of tuition and living costs.
New Zealand universities and visa officers accept a wide variety of international English tests. You can submit standard IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, or Cambridge C1 Advanced results.
- For a Bachelor's Degree: An overall IELTS Academic score of 6.0 bands (with no band less than 5.5).
- For a Master's Degree: An overall IELTS Academic score of 6.5 bands (with no band less than 6.0).
Vietnamese applicants are commonly asked about their specific motives for choosing New Zealand over Vietnam, details of their study program and career alignment, and how they will fund their living costs. Demonstrating a genuine intention to study and a clear study plan remains the most critical factor.
Vietnamese students frequently face high accommodation costs, cultural and language barriers, and an unfamiliar, independent academic style. The distinct lack of traditional Vietnamese ingredients in smaller cities, along with seasonal homesickness and navigating the colder winter climate, also presents notable daily lifestyle adjustments.
A standard bachelor’s degree from recognised Vietnamese universities is broadly accepted for postgraduate applications. However, eligibility depends heavily on institutional recognition, individual GPA, and your IELTS score. A formal assessment by New Zealand universities determines exact equivalency.
