The GMAT Exam, short for the Graduate Management Admission Test, is a standardised global exam that assesses candidates’ business acumen and management skills. It is used across several business and management schools to recruit the best business students from across the world.

The GMAT Focus Edition was an addition to the original GMAT Exam, launched by GMAC on November 7, 2023 and has now completely replaced the previous GMAT format. The primary difference between these versions was that the older GMAT Exam had four sections, whereas the GMAT Focus Edition eliminated the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section.

A significant exam, recognised by over 7,000 programmes at more than 2,300 universities and institutions worldwide, the GMAT Exam is beneficial for the top-tier business schools abroad. Let us understand its importance for aspirants seeking admission overseas.

What is the GMAT Exam?

The GMAT Exam is a computer-based test primarily used for graduate business programmes and MBA admissions. It is a thorough evaluation of a candidate's suitability for advanced management studies, assessing critical abilities such as integrated reasoning, quantitative analysis, and verbal proficiency.

The Exam is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) in nearly 100 major countries for applicants to postgraduate-level business programmes. Applicants may register for the GMAT Exam at any time of year, and their ability to appear for it depends on the exam centre's availability.

What is GMAT Focus Edition?

The GMAT Focus Edition was a new, streamlined version of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) introduced by GMAC on November 7, 2023. This version had a shorter duration (2 hours and 15 minutes) and comprised three sections, most notably removing the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section from the classic GMAT format.

During the transition, both the classic GMAT and the GMAT Focus Edition were offered. Once the classic format was retired, and the Focus Edition structure became the only option available, the name officially reverted to the GMAT Exam on July 1, 2024. The structure, content, and scoring of the current GMAT Exam are the same as those of the former Focus Edition.

GMAT Exam Eligibility

There are no predetermined requirements for taking the GMAT Exam. However, after taking the GMAT Exam, a person should always be able to meet the requirements set forth by the college or university they want to attend. These include the following:
