IELTS Exam FAQs

The full form of IELTS is International English Language Testing System. The IELTS exam is a globally recognised language proficiency test that is designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who are planning to study or work in English-speaking countries. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English, and is accepted by more than 12,000 universities worldwide.

The IELTS score ranges from 0 to 9 bands with 9 being the highest. An IELTS score of 9 bands indicates the highest level of English language proficiency and complete command over the language with accurate, appropriate, and fluent use. Your IELTS results will provide you with the band score for each part of the exam and an overall score, which is calculated as the average of the band scores for the four skills, rounded up to the closest half or whole band.

The IELTS score validity lasts for two years from the date of the test, which means that the IELTS score validity expires after two years from the date of receiving the exam score. So, candidates who want to use their IELTS score for university admissions, employment purposes, or immigration must retake the exam if their scores are older than two years.

For proper IELTS preparation at home, start by familiarising yourself with the exam format. It is also important that you assess your own skills to identify strengths and areas for improvement, which will help you set realistic goals and create a study plan that allocates time for studying, practising, and mock tests. Focus on practising for all four skills covered in the IELTS exam – Reading, writing, listening, and speaking – and practice regularly.

Yes. A valid passport is a mandatory IELTS eligibility requirement. The passport is required at the time of registration and on the test day. The IELTS registration process requires you to provide your passport details and upload copies of the first and last pages of your passport. The passport also serves as your primary identification document and must be shown to gain entry into the test centre.

IELTS exam registration can be done online through the official IDP IELTS India website or offline by visiting an IDP IELTS branch office. For online IELTS exam registration, select “Register for IELTS” or “Book Now”, select the right test format and module, choose the preferred test city and preferred dates, fill out the application form, and pay the registration fee. You will receive a seat confirmation acknowledgement letter. For registering offline, you can visit a nearby IDP IELTS India branch with the relevant documents, like a copy of your passport and observation papers (if applicable).

Keyword: IELTS exam syllabus The IELTS exam syllabus has four sections that assess your overall proficiency in the English language: Listening: 40 questions, 4 sections. Complete within 30 minutes. Speaking: Face-to-face interview, 3 parts. Lasts for 11-14 minutes. Writing: 2 tasks, which are different in IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Complete within 60 minutes. Reading: 3 or more passages for IELTS Academic, shorter excerpts and texts for the IELTS General Training, and 40 questions. Must be completed within 60 minutes.

The minimum score in IELTS for PR varies with different countries. Minimum score requirements can be for specific sections or the overall band score. UK: Minimum score of 4 bands in speaking and listening and a passing grade in IELTS Life Skills at B1 test. Australia: Minimum score of 6 bands in each IELTS section, especially for skilled migration. Canada: Minimum score of 6 bands for Express Entry and skilled worker programmes. New Zealand: Minimum band score requirement varies with different work categories. Example: A minimum score of 6.5 bands is required for skilled migrant category resident visas.

To check your IELTS exam result, you can visit the official IELTS website. Log in using your IELTS test reference number and date of birth to access the online results portal, where you can check your scores and download your Test Report Form (TRF). Your IELTS exam result will be available in 1-5 days after the exam if you took the computer-delivered test and within 13 days after the exam if you took the paper-based test.

What is considered to be a good IELTS score will depend on your specific goals, like university admissions or immigration. Generally, a score of 7 or above is considered to be a good IELTS score for university admissions, especially if you are applying for a competitive programme. The university that you have applied to is also an important factor to consider, as some universities may accept a score of 6.5, while some may require a score of 7.5 or higher.

There is no limit on IELTS exam retakes. However, you will need to pay the full registration fee for every attempt. You can opt for the IELTS One Skill Retake, to improve scores of a single skill. However, to be eligible for the IELTS One Skill Retake, you must have completed a full, computer-delivered IELTS exam. You will only be allowed to sit for the One Skill Retake within 60 days of taking the full test.

The IELTS exam can be taken both online (computer-delivered) and offline (paper-based). The offline IELTS test can only be taken at an official IELTS exam centre. This test format requires candidates to complete their reading, writing, and listening sections on paper, while a certified examiner conducts the speaking test face-to-face. On the other hand, the online IELTS test can be taken from anywhere, including at an official IELTS exam centre or your home. The reading, writing, and listening sections are completed on a computer, while the speaking test is conducted by a certified examiner online via video call.

One of the four skills assessed through the test, reading is required for the reading section as well as for other parts, like writing. To improve reading skills, practice regularly, read different types of texts, time your reading, and do not just read, engage with the text. Also, focus on improving your reading speed while maintaining comprehension. Practice skimming and scanning and use word chunking to minimise rereading. Develop strategic reading techniques, like reading questions first, so you can focus on the right information when you read the passage.
