Why Study in the UK for Indian Students?
Indian students usually choose the UK for three reasons: shorter degrees, including one-year master's programmes; the right to work after graduating; and universities with long research records. A one-year master's also means one less year of fees and living costs than a two-year programme.

Study in the UK for Indian Students FAQs
Here are the questions Indian students ask most about UK fees, admissions, visas, scholarships and work rights.
For many students, yes. One-year master's degrees reduce total tuition and living costs, UK degrees are widely accepted in India, and the Graduate Route lets you work in the UK after you finish. UK teaching also puts weight on independent research and coursework. Whether it suits you depends on your course, budget and career plans.
Tuition fees range from £14,000 to £38,000+ per year (about ₹17.7 lakh to ₹48 lakh). Classroom-based courses such as business usually cost less than lab-based courses such as engineering, and MBAs and clinical medicine sit at the top of the range. Living costs are extra.
UKVI asks for your unpaid first-year tuition plus living costs for up to nine months. That is £14,130 in London or £10,827 outside London. The money must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the bank statement must be dated within 31 days of your visa application.
You need an offer and CAS from a licensed university, attested academic transcripts, proof of English proficiency, and funds for tuition and living costs held for 28 consecutive days.
Start about 10 to 12 months before your intake. Shortlist courses, take IELTS or PTE, apply to universities, accept an offer, pay your deposit to receive your CAS, then apply for your Student visa.
Apply for a bachelor's degree through UCAS with your Class 12 marks (most universities ask for 65% to 80%), a personal statement and a reference. If your marks are below the entry requirement, a one-year International Foundation Year can lead into the degree.
Most universities ask for IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5 for undergraduate courses, and 6.5 or higher for competitive universities.
Yes, at many universities. Some accept a strong Class 12 English score (often 70% or more on CBSE or ISC boards), and postgraduate applicants may use a medium-of-instruction certificate. Policies vary, so check each university.
Yes. You can complete two-year A-Levels or the International Baccalaureate at a UK independent school on a Child Student visa, then apply to UK universities.
Yes. A relevant bachelor's degree qualifies you for one-year taught MSc, MA or MBA programmes, research master's (MRes), or two-year master's with a UK placement year. One-year programmes keep total costs lower, and all of these lead to the Graduate Route visa after you finish.
Bachelor's degrees take three years (four in Scotland), taught master's take one year and PhDs three to four years. Most teaching is through lectures, seminars and independent study, with marks based heavily on coursework and a final dissertation. Universities in England are regulated by the Office for Students, with separate regulators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
There is no single best city. Choose your course and university first, then weigh the city: London costs the most but suits finance careers, while Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow are lower-cost options with large Indian student communities.
Data Science, Business Analytics, Cyber Security, FinTech, Engineering and Healthcare Management are popular because they match roles UK employers hire for regularly. After 12th Science, students often choose Computing, AI, Biotechnology, Pharmacy or Biomedical Science. Medicine also needs the UCAT.
Yes. Students on degree-level courses can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during official university vacations.
Yes, with a fully funded award such as Chevening, Commonwealth or Felix Scholarships, which cover tuition, living costs and usually flights. Places are very competitive, and most university awards cover only part of the fees.
Government awards such as Chevening and Commonwealth use their own online portals and close months before university deadlines, often in the autumn before your intake. University merit scholarships are usually assessed with your course application, though some need a separate form.
Yes. Business schools such as Oxford Saïd, Cambridge Judge and London Business School offer merit scholarships, and many universities offer partial awards to Indian applicants. For PhDs, options include Commonwealth PhD Scholarships, the Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford, the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarship at St John's College, Cambridge, and funded university studentships.
Not directly. Graduates usually move from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa, and time on that route can count towards settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain).
