Why Study in Australia?
Australia has one of the largest Indian communities outside India, so familiar food, festivals and people from home are rarely far away. What sets it apart for Indian students, though, is what happens after graduation.

Top-Ranked Universities
Nine Australian universities are in the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings 2027, led by UNSW Sydney at 19th. Indian students choose them most for IT, engineering, nursing, healthcare and business.

AI-ECTA Work Rights
Under AI-ECTA, Indian graduates can stay on a Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) for 2 years after a bachelor's degree, 3 years after a master's or a STEM bachelor's with first-class honours, and up to 4 years after a PhD. Graduates from most other countries get 2 years after a coursework master's.

MATES Mobility Scheme
The MATES visa (Subclass 403) is a ballot that offers up to 3,000 places a year to young Indian graduates in fields such as engineering, IT, AI and renewable energy. It gives 2 years of work rights in Australia without employer sponsorship.

Intakes Available in Australia
Australian universities follow a structured academic calendar with primary entry points in February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2), while select institutions offer a smaller November fast-track intake, often for specific business, IT, or postgraduate courses. Securing your placement requires aligning your Indian high school (CBSE, ICSE, or State Board percentages) or university transcripts with Australian benchmarks, meeting stringent student visa financial and language criteria, and submitting a complete application well ahead of schedule.

Eligibility Requirements
Your Class 12 marks (often 60% to 65% or more for a bachelor's degree) or a recognised bachelor's degree for a master's, plus your academic transcripts and a valid passport.

Test Preparation
Clear competitive IELTS Academic or PTE Academic exams to comfortably satisfy both university entry benchmarks and Australian visa language requirements.

Intake Deadline
Submit your complete application six to nine months before your target intake to allow ample time for university offer processing, financial verification, and visa approvals.

Indian students thrive in a safe, multicultural society that seamlessly balances high-tech urban centers with a vibrant outdoor lifestyle. Beyond the academic rigour, you will find a massive, deeply rooted Indian diaspora, familiar grocery networks, and active community festivals that make adjusting to life away from home feel incredibly natural.

Study in Australia for Indian Students FAQs
Clear answers on costs, visas, safety, work rights and PR for Indian students considering Australia.
For many students, yes. Indian graduates get longer post-study work rights than most nationalities under AI-ECTA, and nine Australian universities rank in the QS top 100. Costs are high, though, and visa checks for Indian applicants have been stricter since 2026, so plan your finances carefully.
Australia is generally considered safe for international students. Universities run campus security services, the ESOS Act protects your rights as an international student, and the Overseas Students Ombudsman handles complaints about education providers. As anywhere, take normal precautions, especially late at night.
Tuition usually costs AU$20,000 to AU$60,000+ a year, with most bachelor's degrees between AU$20,000 and AU$45,000. Medicine, specialised engineering and MBA programmes sit at the top of the range. Living costs add at least AU$29,710 a year (approximately ₹19.9 lakh), which is also the amount you must show for your visa.
In February 2026, about 4 in 10 higher education visa applications from India were refused, according to reported Home Affairs data. India moved to Evidence Level 3 in January 2026, so applications now need stronger financial evidence and a convincing Genuine Student statement. Refusal rates change, so check the latest figures before you apply.
You need a CoE, a Genuine Student statement, OSHC, an accepted English test score, proof of funds for tuition, travel and AU$29,710 in living costs, health and character checks, and the AU$2,500 visa application fee.
For a bachelor's degree, you need to have completed Class 12, usually with 60% to 65% or more. For a master's, you need a recognised bachelor's degree. You also need an English test score that meets your university's entry level.
Apply directly for a bachelor's degree with your Class 12 marks and an English test score. If your marks are below the entry level, a foundation programme or a diploma can lead into the first or second year of some degrees.
With a recognised bachelor's degree, you can apply for a master's, an MBA or a graduate diploma. A master's gives Indian graduates up to 3 years on a Temporary Graduate visa, and studying and living in a regional area can add one or two more.
No. Australian universities and the Department of Home Affairs also accept PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT, and some universities waive the test if your previous studies were taught in English.
Business Analytics, IT, Cyber Security, Engineering, Nursing and Healthcare are popular because they match occupations on Australia's skills shortage lists, which helps with jobs after graduation.
Apply to your university early, because most merit scholarships are assessed with your course application. Check each university's scholarship page for awards that need a separate form or essay.
Full scholarships are rare for Indian students at bachelor's and master's level, and most awards cover 15% to 50% of tuition. For PhDs and research master's, the Research Training Program (RTP) and university research scholarships can cover tuition and living costs.
Yes. You can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while your course is in session and without a limit during official course breaks.
It is possible through regional pathways, but not guaranteed. The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491) lets you live and work in a designated regional area. After 3 years on that visa and meeting its income requirement, you can apply for permanent residency through Subclass 191. You still need a nomination or sponsorship and enough points.
You can apply on your own, but many Indian students use a consultant because of the extra checks under Evidence Level 3. A good consultant helps you choose the right course, write your Genuine Student statement and organise your financial evidence. Check that the consultancy is an official partner of the universities you apply to.
Teaching combines lectures and tutorials with practical work, internships and group projects. The government's National Planning Level of 295,000 new international students for 2027 is used to prioritise visa processing, not as a hard cap, so genuine students who meet the requirements can still apply.
New South Wales and Victoria have the most Indian students, mainly in Sydney and Melbourne. Both cities also have large, long-established Indian communities outside the universities.
