STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This means that STEM courses in USA refer to degree programmes or courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. However, the definition is not as distinct as "black and white".

For legal purposes, particularly for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, the US Department of Homeland Security and the Student and Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVP) maintain an official list of "STEM-Designated Degree Programmes", which is regularly updated to include or remove programmes that do not meet DHS's definition of a STEM-designated programme.

According to the US DHS, a STEM-designated field is determined based on the Department of Education's DIP taxonomy within two-digit series, which include Engineering (CIP Code 14), biological sciences (CIP Code 26), Mathematics (CIP Code 27), physical sciences (CIP Code 40) or related fields.
