Study in Canada FAQs

Check out the answers to the most common questions Indonesian students ask about studying in Canada, from costs and visas to scholarships and PR.

Undergraduate applicants need a completed SMA/SMK certificate with a strong academic record, plus an accepted English test score (IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5, TOEFL iBT, or CELPIP). Postgraduate applicants need a recognised Bachelor's degree, and some programmes also require the GRE or GMAT.

Tuition typically ranges from CAD 20,000 to CAD 60,000 per year depending on course and institution, with Medicine and Engineering at the higher end. On top of tuition, you'll need to show proof of at least CAD 22,895 in living costs for your study permit application, the figure IRCC currently requires for a single applicant outside Quebec.

Yes. Indonesian citizens apply for a Canada study permit through IRCC, which requires a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof of funds, and, for most undergraduate and diploma applicants, a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). Master's and PhD students at public institutions have been exempt from the PAL requirement since 1 January 2026.

Some institutions accept alternatives such as TOEFL iBT, CELPIP, PTE Academic, or a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter confirming prior study taught in English. Requirements vary by institution and programme, so it's worth confirming directly with your target school.

Toronto and Vancouver host the largest Indonesian student communities, followed by Montreal and Ottawa, giving new arrivals an established network, places of worship, and halal food options in each of these cities.

Study permit holders can work up to 24 hours per week off campus during term time and full-time during scheduled breaks. After graduation, eligible students can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to 3 years, depending on the length of their programme.

Not directly through a study permit, but Canada offers one of the clearest study-to-PR pathways available. Most graduates use their Post-Graduation Work Permit to build Canadian work experience, then apply for permanent residency through Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), both of which award points for Canadian education and work history.

Fully funded undergraduate and Master's coursework scholarships are rare in Canada compared to countries like the UK or Australia, but partial funding is widely available. The Canada-ASEAN SEED programme, open specifically to Indonesian applicants, provides up to CAD 15,900 toward a short-term study or research exchange.

Yes. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship supports doctoral students, while Master's applicants can apply for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) if studying in Ontario, or the Canada-ASEAN SEED programme, which covers Master's and PhD exchanges of 4 to 6 months worth CAD 10,200 to CAD 12,700.

Yes. The Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) programme is funded directly by the Government of Canada and open only to citizens of ASEAN member states, including Indonesia, covering CAD 10,200 to CAD 15,900 depending on level of study and duration.

Canadian institutions and IRCC accept IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, CELPIP, and PTE Academic for English-taught programmes, with the TEF accepted for French-taught programmes in Quebec, with minimum scores varying by institution and level of study.
